Due to COVID-19, Biology Open staff are working remotely, but our editorial operations continue to run as usual. Please contact us by email at bio@biologists.com if you have any queries. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
For more information on measures BiO is taking to support the community at this time, please see here.
Biology Open (BiO) is an online Open Access journal that supports the community of biologists through the publication of peer-reviewed original research across all aspects of the biological sciences. We aim to provide rapid peer review and publication of scientifically sound results and conclusions, without a requirement for perceived impact. BiO also aspires to promote a peer-review system that is timely, thorough, constructive and fair.
Authors are encouraged to submit work of appropriate scope directly to BiO. Editorial decisions are made by an international board of research-active academic Editors, led by Editor-in-Chief Steven Kelly and supported by Deputy Editors Cathy Jackson and Yishi Jin.

Alpha-synuclein aggresomes inhibit ciliogenesis and multiple functions of the centrosome
Anila Iqbal, Marta Baldrighi, Jennifer N. Murdoch, Angeleen Fleming, Christopher J. Wilkinson
Aggresomes of alpha-synuclein – the main component of the Lewy bodies in Parkinson's disease – prevent microtubule nucleation by the centrosome and inhibit cells, including olfactory neurons, from making cilia.
Not just scratching the surface: distinct radular motion patterns in Mollusca
Carolin Scheel, Stanislav N. Gorb, Matthias Glaubrecht, Wencke Krings
The radula is the food-processing organ in Mollusca. Scheel et al. used high-resolution video footage to document distinct motion patterns while feeding. They discovered that the radula can be used as counter bearings, enabling the tearing of large food items.

Shifting away from the business-as-usual approach to research conferences
Chelsie W. W. Counsell, Franziska Elmer, Judith C. Lang
This Meeting Review provides details on a potential future direction for scientific conferences that incorporates restrictions relevant to the current pandemic and climate change.
Recipients of Scientific Research Grants from The Company of Biologists can apply to publish their own Meeting Review in BiO.
In related news, The Company of Biologists has launched its new Sustainable Conferencing Initiative. Find out how we plan to help biologists continue to communicate productively while minimising their impact on the environment.
